For years and years I have avoided the dreaded ‘niche’ in my private practice, it wasn’t something I wanted to do, I hate boxes and value freedom and variety… however time and again I have been reminded how important it is.
Then I realised that although I enjoy working with people from all walks of life and will continue to do so.
The sector which excites me most and where I am now focusing my time, is when I am working with people within the Environmental Sector, which I have been doing now for a number of years. I understand the worries and anxiety’s they are facing and the pressure they are feeling when working tirelessly to protect the environment, against which for many feels like fighting a losing battle.
Now I have made the decision, it seems so obvious, to combine my two passions, psychology and the environment, it has always been something close to my heart. I wanted to study Environmental Science at Uni when I was just 18 (a long time ago), however my life circumstances when I was younger meant that wasn’t an option, although I did briefly work in the industry for a short time in my early 30’s. I am always looking for ways to reduce my impact and even plant trees as a part of my business, I also volunteer locally protecting our wonderful Grey Seals and you may have noticed I spend half my life on the beach or in the sea!
So now to being able to combine my love and interest in the environment and the natural world, with my other love of coaching psychology and bringing the knowledge of obtaining a MSc in Psychology and being a Master Certified Coach, it seems an obvious fit, and if I can use my expertise to help to support individuals and organisations who are protecting our planet, I am still part of the solution which is a win win!
I have just been on a call with the The British Psychological Society about Psychological Perspectives on the Climate and Biodiversity Crisis, which inspired me to write this blog. It was really interesting to hear just how important psychology is in becoming part of the solution. It is something I have been thinking about for a while and I intended to study it further.
The important thing is that we have to work together if we want to bring about positive change and it starts with how we think and how we look after ourselves while we work tirelessly to protect our environment and bio diversity.
