What are you taking for granted?

What are you taking for granted?

In the UK right now, we have been experiencing unprecedented hot spells, with very little, if any rain and we are really noticing it. I have never seen such devastation of landscapes due to weather conditions like this in my life time. People and animals, particularly wildlife are struggling with the heat, there are numerous wildfires (often though humans being careless/thoughtless) and our world is changing before our eyes, not for the better.

Yet people are still denying climate change even when it is happening before our eyes… We also have people in positions of power making destructive choices which will impact us all negatively and the generations who follow.

Drawing Parallels

I digress, back to my point, it got me thinking sometimes we wish for something, without considering how lucky we are to have what we already have, and although I am talking about this in terms of the environment, it also translates to other areas of our lives.

Let me explain, for many years people have wished for heat like this, long hot summers with no rain. However the reality is very different from the perception of what it might be…

The reality is that this level of heat is too much for our landscapes. We need the rain to keep our grass green, to cool the earth, to nourish our crops, to sustain wildlife and to fill our reservoirs. And now we are wishing for rain, for cooler days, for a break from the constant heat.

It reminds me of arriving in Kerala in December 2024 after being away for several months in constant heat ad dry conditions. I was so excited it was raining and the feeling of being rained on, what we sometimes take for granted we miss when we feel it’s absence.

What about this is true for you?

I wonder what in your life right now you may be taking for granted, what is your ‘rain’ that you may miss if it wasn’t there?  I believe learning to appreciate what we have right now, ‘dancing in the rain if you like’ is a wonderful gift…

Of course having hopes and dreams for the future and goals to work towards is important, it brings us purpose and joy and opportunities for growth, however it is also important to sometimes appreciate the now, to live in the present too, going back to my example, learning to dance in the rain, whilst also looking forward to sunny days, both can be true!
